i queue a random assortment of my gifs on twitter daily and they just do not understand the culture around giffing on tumblr and i don’t know how to explain it to them. they get upset with me for using color filters, think the resolution looks “weird/bad” because it’s not actually a video and they don’t realize that (they don’t really know what a GIF is sometimes), and they think i’m a jerk for having a small watermark on my more recent gifs. it’s all so lost on them i can’t even begin to make them understand
i wrote up a massive comparison post for a bunch of the current and upcoming social medias out there for artists! hopefully this can shed some light on the options out there and what looks promising!

I don’t have all that much energy and my brain is only half-working so it’s being hard to put into words what I want to say exactly but I still wanted to highlight THIS! The way both Phoenix and 66 see so much worth in Child Emperor, the way they are so vocal about it, the fact that there is so much parallelism between their interactions with him but how different the intentions and results and emotions conveyed behind those words are.
This kid is NO FOOL and sees right through all of it, but he’s still taken aback by the words of both these very clever, very charismatic adults. There is a lot of talk about relationships and interactions between adults and youngsters in One Punch Man and especially in Mob Psycho 100, and I love that they make an effort to show how creepy and dangerous grown ups can be behind very convincing arguments, rationalization, fallacies, etc. and these adults sometimes won’t even realize it themselves. However, I find it also important that they show actually wholesome relationships too, in this case in what seems direct contrast to the “bad ones”.
(The whole conversation is really long so I edited a couple panels with some of the quotes I wanted to highlight)
Even though every 2 panels Child Emperor was telling himself “this is just a trick don’t fall for it”, he still didn’t enjoy it one bit having his “dark emotions” exposed aloud like that. Of course, there is nothing wrong with feeling lonely and getting stressed out about the state of things, but he seems to think that letting those things get the best of him sometimes, makes him “weak”. And he probably feels really bad about the fact that he… hates adults. He wants to trust them, he wants to be trusted by them… he wants to have someone older and wiser to rely on, he wants to be able to show weakness sometimes, and fail, without the weight of the world falling on him if he does… and he wants to be told that he did good all those times he didn’t fail, he wants to be USEFUL and is continuously overcompensating. He’s a genius with great emotional intelligence on top of all his other qualities and skills, but he’s 10 and extremely lonely and stressed. And the fact that he is calling himself USELESS of all people?!
Even if Phoenix does feel some connections to the kid and can empathise with a lot of what’s going on with him, it is made very clear that he’s all about scouting Child Emperor (and Garou) for his own “noble” goals and also for his own self-approval. The worst part is, he’s being completely honest, and he thinks he’s right… nevermind his superhuman powers, that’s a very dangerous adult right there. He physically forced himself on Garou before, and now he forces himself on Child Emperor, too: he holds his hand, pats him on the back, touches his forehead as he talks to him. The kid reacts with apprehension almost every time. Child Emperor is tired of adults trying to use him and patronizing him AND also of adults acting like he doesn’t realize what they are doing.
But even then, even knowing all this, Phoenix still manages to get a bit through him. Both Phoenix and 66 make the kid feel “useful” with their words… but in the end, only 66 makes him feel APPRECIATED in the way he needs.
Look at him… the surprise? shock? on his face, the expression he’s making is so similar during both conversations, in that moment when Phoenix and 66 really get through him… in that moment when he’s thinking about that companionship he so desperatedly seeks. Phoenixman and Child Emperor exchanged many MANY words in person, even touches, even a mental-space-thing, and yet, in comparison, it took Zombieman only like 10 seconds and 5 sentences over a communicator to get throught the kid. A simple apology, heartfelt thanks, a wish that they both return safely so they can share some milkshakes and peace together. Little did the birdbrain know, this kid already has a trustworthy companion… they just never got the luxury to have this kind of heart to heart before, for Child Emperor to realize that all the respect and admiration and wish for companionship he has been feeling towards the person he considers his role model is very much reciprocated…
To finish up, I want to mention the way in which 66 had been approaching the kid all this time: in contrast to Phoenix (and in contrast to what many “bad adults” often do) 66 never forced himself on the kid, even when 66 took the initiative almost every time they interact (going to check on him, asking if he’s ok, reminding him “I am here, if you need me”) he always left the boy to his own business and simply quietly supported his work when needed (or even not so quietly, when confronting Amai on Child Emperor’s behalf that one time). Actively seeking little interactions, while giving the other his space. Maintaining a good-colleagues thing, but occasionaly getting a bit more personal, if the moment seemed right. Kind, but never patronizing, just like he would talk to most other fellow heroes.
Anyway I must go to sleep I just really love these two and please be a good adult, in special towards kids!!! And no I didn’t forget Saitama’s role in all this but that’s a talk for another day
I’ve been looking forward to hearing what you had to say.
An old YouTube video which I regret not saving said something that really stuck with me, that ONE uses overpowered MCs to take power clean off the table as the thing to look at. Even if a part of the story is made up entirely of fights, it’s still about kindness. As far as I’m concerned, it’s about the importance of relationships. OPM is extra big on the idea that becoming human is something we have to work on, through the way we realise ourselves and through the way we give and take from others.
OPM has never been shy about fucked-up shit, but this is the first time the story has done a dive into just how cruel and manipulative others can be. Phoenixman is so beguiling. Even knowing it’s manipulation doesn’t stop Child Emperor from being influenced. It’s only being reminded that there are good people he can trust, respect and look up to that gives him the perspective to break free.
This isn’t a parent-child relationship (there are many sorta parents looking out for their ‘children’ in OPM), but another very important adult-child relationship: the uncle. The one who recognises your efforts and includes you in ‘grown up’ things. It’s so important.
I really am enjoying how the essential tension between ‘being your own person’ and ‘being helped by others’ is explored. I call it tension rather than conflict because both are necessary in the end.
I am sorry to make this even longer but I super appreciate your additions and to comment on your last thought: one thing I really REALLY like about Zombieman and Saitama is that they don’t try to fight other people’s fights… instead, they help them back on their feet, enable them to try their best, and watch over them. Sometimes Saitama will have to finish the job (often, actually) because sometimes the situation is so bad that no matter how much the person is trying and how much support you offer, a person can just do so much, but the point was to give others a chance to at least try and learn and realize than they are much more capable than they thought, and that they can get better.
I’ve actually talked about that before, in special in contrast to Tatsumaki’s really insane overprotectiveness with Fubuki. Like you said, it’s all about relationships and a balance between working to be independent but being allowed to depend on others too, and giving back by helping others as well. Knowing that you are allowed to fail, and that someone will have your back, it’s so important because learning and development in general get really stalled when your levels of stress are so that you get overwhelmed knowing you have to do the thing alone and get it right on your first try or there would be consequences, consequences that you will ALSO have to deal with on your own.
This one goes on my main art blog because it’s one of my fav posts that I’ve ever written. I will always feel a very special fondness towards Isamu and 66′s bond, I’m so glad they continued to show more of it over the years.
here’s a little comparison for people who say engagement hasn’t gotten that bad and anyone who complains is ungrateful.
these are two posts from my first go round on tumblr circa 2014-2017, my most popular gifset of all time
& a text post
notice how the ratio is about even on likes to reblogs?
here’s from this go around, my most popular gifset
and my most popular fic
do you see how that’s discouraging?
i love being on this site. i love the little community i’ve found and the people who follow me and the mutuals i’ve made friendships with and the mutuals that i’m still getting to know. i love it. but at a certain point it’s hard to justify spending so much time on works that get bad engagement.
reblog, comment, send asks. without them, this site doesn’t work.
recently a few people have asked how i sharpen my gifs and so i thought i’d put together a little SHARPENING TUTORIAL for anyone who’s interested…
the first thing i’d say is to make sure you’re using the most hq images/screencaps/clips you can find. i know this advice gets thrown around a lot but for good reason! here’s a really good post with more info on where to find the best stuff to use. now on to the tutorial:
we’re using smart filters in this tutorial which means smart objects babyyy
group your layers if you haven’t already and convert the group into a smart object (filter > convert for smart filters)
now duplicate your smart object so you have two identical layers
apply a smart sharpen filter to the bottom layer (filter > sharpen > smart sharpen)
my standard settings:
amount: 500%
radius: 0.2 - 0.5 px (see what looks best!)
remove: lens blur
“more accurate” selected
good work! now if that’s looking a little extreme don’t worry, we’re not done!
apply a gaussian blur filter to your top layer (filter > blur > gaussian blur)
set the slider to 1.0 pixels
finally set the opacity of your blur layer to 25%
and that is it! your layers should now look a little like this:
the lovely thing about this is that you can basically keep your filter settings the same for whatever you’re working on and simply play with the opacity of that blur layer should you want to increase/decrease the sharpness!
fingers crossed this all makes sense. if anything wasn’t clear or you have further questions don’t be afraid to ask. happy giffing!!
I am such a huge horse nerd and I apologize. :( But I’m really tired of seeing girths that are halfway down a horse’s stomach. This may not be interesting to anyone who is not me, but I like to draw fancy saddles and ridiculously long shanks on bits. Also, horses are the only animal I can draw, so I take advantage of that.
I hope this helps some frustrated non-horsey artists in at least some small way. Remember, when in doubt, add some buckles and some rings. :)
I keep seeing these weird ass girths on saddles people draw. It’s a belt, yo. A belt a horse wears at its “waist”, i.e. the narrowest part of its abdomen that is not its crotch area. Horses tend not to like girths near their back legs. Case in point:
That strap in front of their back legs is what makes bucking broncos buck.
@skycowboys This would probably be vital info for fan artists of the SC world xD I recall we had a convo a long time ago about how horse equipment is shown in media and this addresses all those problems!
I made me Gamma 2 stickers for whatsapp lmao feel free to use wherever… you can have one murdery Gamma 1 too. I wanted to make more of G1 but he’s less expressive than his brother and I don’t have much to work with until the blu ray releases, expect more in December :D
I’m finally playing Pokemon Legends Arceus and
I’m just realizing the game is somewhat inspired on the Chinese classic Shui Hu
Zhuan, often localized as Water Margin, or as All Men Are Brothers, or also as (-The
108-) Outlaws of the Marsh.
*THIS POST MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS*
I have seen people comment on how Spiritomb and
Typhlosion (Hisui variant) are related to the number 108 in various ways, as
it’s the novel I’ll be discussing. To gather the Pokemon facts first, let’s
start mentioning that to get Spiritomb in Pokemon Arceus, you have to find the 108
wisps wandering around Hisui, and some of Spiritomb’s Pokedex entries read:
‘Exactly 108 spirits gathered to become this
Pokémon. Apparently there are some ill-natured spirits in the mix.’ 'It was
bound to a fissure in an Odd Keystone as punishment for misdeeds 500 years ago.’
As for Hisuian Typhlosion, Professor Laventon
says in the Pokedex 'Said to purify lost, forsaken souls with its flames and
guide them to the afterlife.’ Additionally, from the official Legends website we
also learn the following:
'It emits ghost flames –said to number as many
as 108- from the fires around its neck. These flames all attack the opponent, adopting
the countenance of ferocious beasts.’
Some people already explained that the number
108 is significant in various Asian religions, but to be brief, it often
revolves around the idea that there are 108 'temptations’ on the way to Nirvana,
108 mundane 'feelings’ in the way to purification, etc. and so, many rituals and
traditions involve the number in some way (rosaries have 108 beads for this
reason, temples sometimes have literally 108 steps, they ring bells 108 times,
etc.)
Shui Hu Zhuan, or Water Margin, is among the Four
Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. JRPG enjoyers such as myself might
have heard of it because of Suikoden or Eiyuden… being a Suikoden fan for as
long as I’ve been a Pokemon fan, my impression is that this novel is not known
to westerners, so allow me to explain further.
